Inside
The Glory Box
Hidden Meanings
I picked this journal up while I was in India in 2008 at a market called Dilli Haat. My local coworkers helped ne negotiate a fair price. It was a gift for my father; he kept a journal at that time and the camel carving reminded me of photos I’d seen of his time in the Air Force when he was stationed in Morocco. This was my inspiration for the journal in the first book of The Glory Box series. It plays an important role in the book, revealing secrets and deception. But who’s journal is it? And what’s inside that’s so troubling? I enjoy finding ways to incorporate real people and objects into my stories. The journal is one example. My father passed away but his journal is forever memorialized in The Glory Box. |
In The Children of Autumn, we learn the tree on the cover of the books is actually a central part of the story. It’s called the Bam-Bam tree which is a totally made-up name using my father's initials. The fruit on the tree, Sillyhp, is my mother’s name spelled backward. The cover of Pineapple in Winter is the original photograph that I took while in Switzerland on a business trip. I have no idea what kind of tree it actually is, but it looked cool and so I decided to use it. The same photo was manipulated in photoshop to create the cover for the second book and will be manipulated again for the next two books in the series. And speaking of pineapple, the sparkling pineapple tchotchke Hanita plucked from the shelf in Vytas' apartment is also real. I have one.

The Glory Box:
Insider Information
Curious what the valley cradled by mountains looks like? In Books 2 and 3, there are so many references to the village, the meadow, and the valley that I made myself a map so I would stay grounded. I mean, I had to. It's so easy to get lost and turned around when I'm describing the Circle Road, or The Main Trail, or The Winding Path. I know the map isn't perfect but I hope you'll cut me some slack-it's my first map! I hope your mental image matches what you see here. |
